Year 4 - Hawthorn

The attached document shows the key instant recall facts for the year (scroll down for year 4).

We had an amazing time at the York Chocolate Story! Here are some pictures that show the fun we had.

Summer 2 multiplication links

As part of your homework this half-term, I have asked you to concentrate on your x tables up to 12 x 12. The following websites can be used to help you practice!

There are lots of other websites that you could use, as well as the my maths site.

Year 4 have begun work on a shortened, but very exciting version of Macbeth for Shakespeare week. There has been some excellent acting so far!

Latest Spellings 7.4.16

For the last few weeks, we have been looking at the statutory list of words for year 3/4 children (see document for list). We have aimed to learn 5 a day. It would appear that this is having a positive effect as the results of a test of 15 random words from this list was very positive! Well done Year 4!

This week, we looked at e-safety.

We watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=599I1E-rWTU

Then we came up with a list of top tips for staying safe on the internet. These can be seen below.

Hawthorn’s top tips for internet safety 2015/2016

  • Tell parents if you are worried about the way someone is talking to you on the internet.
  • Make sure all of your personal details and photos are private so that only friends can see them.
  • Keep your password to yourself and make sure it isn’t easy to guess.
  • Don’t ever arrange to meet up with someone that you don’t know.

If you have received nasty messages or something you are worried about, click the report abuse button (after speaking to your parents about it).

Last week we looked at words that end with -le.

Spellings 28.1.16

This week we have been looking at prefixes. We have identified how adding letters to the start of a word can change its meaning.

Spring 1 update

How were the pyramids made?

This half term, we will be looking at buildings throughout history. We are starting by trying to answer the above question. We will do this by looking at a range of primary and secondary sources.

We have also begun working on the 'Archie project'. This involves the children performing tasks that will help people at home and within their community. The first set of tasks have been written up, and it is clear that the children have enjoyed doing a range of helpful things! More updates on this to come, including a community project that will see the children helping some of the older members of the village.

Here is a picture of one of our latest spelling boards.

We were looking at strategies for spelling an unfamiliar word. We agreed that a good strategy is to identify letters that you definitely know and try to work the rest out from there.

Autumn 2 update

Hi everyone, I hope you are all enjoying the new half term.

We have got some very exciting things going on over the next few weeks! Possibly the most exciting is the making of our marble mazes! The design process is proving to be tricky, but it will all be worth it! We will post pictures when construction gets under way.

Below is a picture of our latest spellings board.

Thanks,

Mr C

Welcome to the Hawthorn class page for 2015/16!

We have had a very busy start to the term since I returned to work from paternity leave!

In literacy, we have concentrated on Greek myths. We look forward to Thursday 8th October when parents are invited to visit our class, as we write our own myths based on 'The Twelve Labours of Heracles'. The children have already created their own amazing mythical creatures to help them with this task! Pictures to follow.

In Maths, we have concentrated on understanding place value, mental maths and decimals so far. The children are all aiming to get their Superman times table certificates by the end of the year!

We have lots more to keep you up to date with as the school year progresses.

In the mean time, here is a great link to some fun times table games: http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/times-tables
