MMAR
What is MMAR and why do we use it?
MMAR stands for MAKE ME A READER. It is our schools strategy to build fluent readers who know their strategies to help them read any word.
Reading fluency is the ability to read accurately, smoothly and with expression. Fluent readers recognize words automatically, without struggling over decoding issues. They sound natural, as if they’re speaking.
Our 4 MMAR skills!
MMAR also stands for the 4 skills children need to know to build their fluency:
M – My sounding out – sound out words into their phonemes and blend them together to read the word
M – Miss it out figure it out – Read the sentence again and miss out the word you are stuck on – Can your brain figure the word out?
A – A picture might help – Look at the picture on the page - are there any clues to help you guess what your word is?
R – Right down the middle - Split the word you are stuck on in half – sound out one side, then the other and read the whole word together.
