Barwick-in-Elmet Church of England Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff, governors and volunteers to share this commitment. We recognise that safeguarding encompasses the duties of child protection and promoting the rights and welfare of children. It is everyone’s responsibility to safeguard children and adults in school and provide a safe environment in which children can learn. We have a dedicated safeguarding and child protection team and a number of policies and procedures in place that contribute to our safeguarding commitment, including our safeguarding and child protection policy.

Safer recruitment

Barwick-in-Elmet Church of England Primary School follows safer recruitment policy and guidelines, in line with Department for Education guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education 2023’. This is to ensure all recruitment for employees, volunteers and placements, is both safe and fair. Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people is an integral factor in recruitment and selection and is an essential first step in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and creating safe environments for children and young people.

Prevent duty

Our safeguarding responsibilities include protecting children from radicalisation and extremism. This is known as the Prevent duty, and all of our staff and governors have completed the e-learning training via the government portal. More information on the Prevent approach is available here.

Online safety

We take online safety very seriously in school and use the SMART rules to ensure all our children stay safe online. All of our staff and governors have completed online safety training through Leeds for Learning. Children learn about keeping safe online and how to protect themselves through the PSHE curriculum alongside a calendar of whole school assemblies and theme weeks. It is important that parents are well-informed and know what children are accessing online at home, especially if they have their own phones, tablets or computers.
