Weekly Class Updates

Friday 9th July 2021
This week in Maths we have been working on shape. We have looked at the properties of triangles and quadrilaterals as well as moving onto working on symmetry. 
In English, we have been writing diary entries. The writing we have written this week is going to be typed up and put into a book! For fun, we have also written diary entries pretending that we are a piece of sporting equipment!
We have also had the clay out again this week to practice our skills. Have a look at the photos below.

 

Friday 2nd July 2021

This week has been assessment week! Everyone has worked so hard during assessment week and you should all be proud of the scores you have achieved.

Amazing work Year 4!

In English this week, we have completed our independent writes. We have begun to discuss the main features of writing a diary to support a special piece of writing we have been asked to do!

In PE this week, we have continued with rounder’s. We have become much more confident with the rules and have managed to play a simple game. We are hoping to add more rules each week until we are playing a full game of rounder’s!

Another fabulous week!

I have been very impressed this week with everyone’s writing. This week you have been writing your independent stories. It has been brilliant to listen to such a wide range of ideas. Well done to everyone who has remembered the work we did in innovation and used our grammar objectives in your writing.

In Maths, we finished our statistics and we have moved onto properties of shapes. We have been learning all about acute, obtuse and right angles. You have worked with these angles to compare and order them. Next week we will move onto properties of triangles.

As part of RE this week we looked at an image “The Impossible Village”. Everyone impressed me with the ideas they came up with when looking for clues in the image connected to religion.

Friday 18th June 2021

Well done to everyone for their fantastic effort during Sports Day! We had a lovely time outside and the weather was warm but not too hot!

This week in Maths we have been learning all about statistics. We have been reading information from different types of charts and tables and using them to answer reasoning and problem solving questions.

In English, we have started out guided write. Next week we will be finishing our guided write and then moving onto our independent write.

Today, we have started our Geography work. We have been using the atlas to locate different mountains and finding out about their location.

Happy Friday!
This week has gone extremely fast in year 4!

In Math’s, we have finished our unit on time. Some children found this unit very challenging but all children worked really hard and persevered even when they found it challenging.

In English, we have started a new unit of writing. Our model text this half term is called ‘Sophie’s Sprite Adventure’. As part of our hook lesson, we created magic doors outside. Have a look at our fabulous creations below!

In PE, we have been practicing for Sports Day next week as well as starting our rounder’s work! We have also started our new science unit which is all about sound. As a class we used cups to make ‘drums’ to show the vibrations, imitating how sound travels.

Happy Half Term!

Well done for all your hard work this half term. 

This week, Miss Bird has been teaching time in Maths. We have been looking at Hours, Minutes and Seconds as well as Years, Months, Weeks, and Days. We have looked carefully at 2021 calendars to support us to answer questions. After half term, we will be continuing our work on time and looking at analogue and digital clocks.

In English we have been working on our independent writes. Miss Bird was really impressed with how well everyone was able to use their knowledge of their grammar to support them during editing. Great work everyone!

In Art, we have drawn inspiration from our focus artist Sonia Delaunay. This week we have created pictures inspired by her work.

Mrs Fox has stapled a Half Term Reading Record Sheet into everyone’s planners. Over half term, you have an opportunity to earn up to 5 more stamps that will go towards our reading challenge! If you finish your school reading book, then you could choose to read a book of your own choice.

Friday 21st May 2021

This week has been another very wet week! We had to rush inside on Tuesday towards the end of our PE lesson due to rain and then couldn’t even go outside on Wednesday! We were all very disappointed but we did do PE inside.

In Maths this week, Miss Bird has been teaching. She has been continuing our work on decimals. We have worked on rounding decimals to the nearest whole number as well as working with halves and quarters in decimals.

In English this week, Mrs Fox has been working with us on our guided write. We have all been using the model text to help guide us. We have all chosen a new setting to write about. Mrs Fox chose a secret garden that wasn’t as lovely or innocent as it first appeared and she has been explaining why!

Great work year 4!

In Math’s, we have finished our first unit on decimals and moved onto a second decimals unit. Everyone has worked really hard to make sure they try their best each lesson. I have been so impressed with all the reasoning and problem solving everyone has been doing this week. Well done.

In English, we completed the final drafts of our independent writes. Everyone worked really hard to make sure that they presented their work really neatly. We have now moved onto our new unit of writing all about explanation texts. As part of our hook lesson, we investigated when the Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre. We considered who the culprits were and you explained your thoughts! We had great fun!

Friday 7th May 2021

This week has flown by! Everyone has worked really hard over the last 4 days.

In English, we have been writing our Independent writes. Where possible, we have tried to link our warning tales to our history topic of the Romans. The children have been working really hard to include all the grammar objectives we have covered during our guided write. Well done!

We have also been working on spelling and handwriting this week as part of our English KIPP work. I have been so impressed with how hard everyone has worked. I can really see how hard everyone has worked to improve their handwriting.

In Maths, we have moved onto hundredths. We have worked with hundredths as a fraction and a decimal. Well done to everyone who has worked really hard to challenge themselves on the reasoning and problem solving questions this week. Great work!

Friday 30th April 2021

This week in English we have been working on year 4 grammar objectives as part of the innovation. Each day, we have covered a grammar objective reminding ourselves how we could use them in our work before we have written a paragraph of our guided write.

In Maths, we have been working with tenths. We have been working with tenths as a fraction and as a decimal. We have also been using a variety of representations to help us such as a place value grid and a number line.

In Science, we have learnt all about the functions of the digestive system. Next week, we move on to talk about teeth!

What a busy week!

It was fantastic to see the children dressed up as different people from History. It was a great way to launch our History topic!

In English this week, we have started our new unit of work which looks at warning tales. We started our unit of work by making catapults from lollipop sticks and elastic bands to link in with our Romans topic. The children have since begun to learn the model text from memory!

In Maths, we have finished our unit of work on fractions! We have found this unit of work very tricky at times so we will be revisiting lots of it through our fluency work. We will be moving onto decimals next week.

We have also started our science this week. We have been learning the different parts of the digestive system and we will be learning more about their functions next week!

HAPPY EASTER!

We have had an extremely busy week this week. We have been making Easter Cards, finishing writing, as well as working on our Art! We have had a lovely week despite it being quite so jam packed!

I hope everyone has a wonderful, restful Easter Holiday. Hopefully the forecasts are wrong and we have some lovely weather to enjoy while we are off.

Friday 26th March 2021

This week we have had assessment week. Everyone worked really hard to complete their tests and it has been evident that children were working hard at home during school closure!

In English this week, we have been learning the model text and we have started our guided write. We have all planned our journey story for our guided write and we have begun to revise some grammar to try and include in our writing.

In Maths, we have continued working with fractions. Hopefully, we will have finished our unit next week before we break up for the Easter holidays.

This week has been another very busy week in Year 4.

We started the week by making paper sculptures in art as part of our unit of work this half term!

In English, we have started a new unit of writing. Our new unit is a fiction unit that is all about journey stories. This week we have drawn our own text maps for the model text and we have begun to learn it off by heart.

In Maths, we have continued our unit on fractions. We have worked hard to understand improper fractions and mixed number fractions by using representations to make sure our knowledge in secure.

Friday 12th March 2021

Welcome back to school!!

It has been so lovely to be back together as a whole class in school again. We have been extremely busy this week!

In English, we have completed our independent writes. Everyone has worked really hard at improving their editing skills to make sure that they have included all the components they have been asked to.

In Maths, we started a new unit on Fractions. Although many of us have found this challenging, we have worked really hard on equivalent fractions. We are going to continue some more work on this next week.

In Art, we introduced our focus artist for this half term. Our artist is Megan Coyle who is uses collage to create amazing pieces of art such as animals, landscapes and still life!

Friday 18th December 2020

Today marks the end of the first term!

I would like to thank the children for all their hard work and commitment since starting back at school in September. The children have adapted to our new environment and we have worked together to create a happy and creative place to learn. They really do deserve a rest over the Christmas Holidays!

I hope that everyone has a Happy Christmas and I look forward to welcome the children back in the New Year.

This week, we have been working on dividing numbers by 10 and 100 in Maths.

In English, we have completed our most recent unit in English. Everyone has written their own finding tale based around our model text Reilly.

On Monday, we had Alive and Kicking in school. They performed a socially distant panto for us.

Friday 27th November 2020

This week we have finished off our Maths unit on Perimeter. We have worked hard to find the perimeter of rectilinear shapes. We start our new unit all about multiplication and division this next week.

In English, we have finished planning our guided write and are ready to start writing!

In Science, we experimented with different materials to find out if they are conductors or insulators of electricity. We set up simple circuits to test the different materials.

Friday 20th November 2020

It has been another busy week in Year 4!

In Maths, we have been learning all about perimeter. We have started off by calculating the perimeter of rectilinear shapes that have been on a grid before we moved onto calculating the perimeter of rectangles.

In English, we have started a new unit of work. On Tuesday, we completed our Hook lesson which involved us all making our own magical wizard wand!

In Science this week, we have been testing circuits. The children have made circuits to find out which were complete circuits and which circuits were incomplete!

It has been another busy week in Year 4!

In Maths, we have finished our unit on addition and subtraction with some estimating. We made sure that we could remember how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 before we estimated answers using these skills.

In English, we have been writing our independent writes. We have drafted and edited our independent writes before copying them up in best. Next week, we will start our new writing unit!

Welcome back after half term!

This week in English we have been busy writing! Our focus at the moment is to explain how something works. We have been explaining how our spy gadgets work! As a class, we have been trying to complete as much of our guided write as we can! We still have one more paragraph left!

Within Maths, we have really challenged ourselves to answer more challenging subtraction questions. Next week, we move onto a new until of work which is all about length.

This week, we have started our new science topic and art work. In Art, we have looked at our BIG Picture which is “Street Light” by Giacomo Balla.

Friday 23rd October 2020

In Maths, we have been doing lots of work on addition. We have been working on our reasoning and problem solving skills and challenging our knowledge of column addition.

In English, we finished learning our model text ready for after half term when we start the innovation stage.

In RE this week with Mrs Nicholson, we created our own Gospel frieze panel in response to our unit question: What kind of world did Jesus want?

Friday 16th October 2020

It has been another very busy week this week!

In English, we have started our new unit of writing. This unit is all about explanation texts. We have been learning our new model text over the last few days and so this week as part of our Home Learning I have asked the children to practise recalling the model text from memory using the actions we learnt and their text map.

In Maths, we have been working with Roman Numerals. We have worked really hard applying our knowledge of Roman Numerals to addition and subtraction questions! Everyone has done a brilliant job of converting Roman Numerals to numbers so they can complete calculations before they have converted their answer back to Roman Numerals!!

In Art, we have been working on mixing colours using Power Paint. All the children have developed their mixing skills and will be working on creating a portrait next week!

It was lovely to talk to all the parents this week at our Virtual Parents Evening.

This week in Maths, we have been looking at rounding numbers. We have rounded to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. Over the week, the children have built up their confidence and have done really well at moving between rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000!

In English this week, been writing independent stories set in a rainforest. The children planned and wrote these stories on their own - There are some fabulous independent stories!

Friday 2nd October 2020

This week has been another very busy week! In Maths, we have been ordering 4-digit numbers, counting in 25’s and we have been working on our subtraction in our fluency lessons. We have been building our confidence when we have to exchange numbers.

In writing this week, we have planned and started to write our independent stories! We have been trying to apply everything we have learnt into our story to improve it.

In RE this week with Mrs Nicholson, we had a virtual visitor! We were very excited when we got the chance to have a virtual meeting!

Friday 25th September 2020

This week in English, we have been working on the Innovation Stage in Talk for Writing. We have been recapping grammar and punctuation objectives such as fronted adverbials and inverted commas to include in our writing. We have planned and written our innovated stories with support from the model text and the work in class. Next week, we move onto independent application which involves us writing our own stories with as little support as possible.

In Maths this week, we have been using the more than and less than symbols. We have become much more confident when using them to compare different 4-digit numbers.

Friday 18th September 2020

This week in Talk for Writing we have been working on the Imitation Stage. As a class, we have learnt the model text using actions and a text map. We also played games to check how well we knew it! Once we had learnt our model text off by heart, we wrote it out in words from memory, just using the text map to help us!!

Within Maths, we have been trying really hard to become more confident when plotting numbers and estimating numbers on a number line.

Friday 11th September

What a FANTASTIC first week back! I have really enjoyed getting to know the children in year 4! We have had a busy week full of exciting things!

As part of our Talk for Writing, we have practiced using a text map to learn the model text. We used actions to help us remember! The children then changed the story and created their own text maps.

Today, we have also had a secret mission as part of our launch to our new unit of writing!!

In Maths this week, we have done lots of work around place value. We have been working with 4-digit numbers – the children have looked at 1000 more and 1000 less than any number as well as looking at partitioning numbers. We have used a range of practical resources and representations to support us this week.

Another exciting thing we have got up to this week is Music! This half term, we are looking at music from Mamma Mia! We listened to the music first, found the pulse of the music and then we created our own rhythms.
