In Reception we use Read Write Inc to learn letter sounds.

When using Read Write Inc to read your child will;

• learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/ letter groups using simple picture prompts
• learn to read words using ‘Fred Talk’
• read fun stories featuring words they can read independently
• develop good comprehension by answering questions

When using Read Write Inc to write your child will;

• learn to write letters/ letter groups which represent 44 sounds
• learn to write words through ‘Fred Talk’
• write simple sentences

Once your child has learnt a few sounds they will then be taught to blend a few sounds together to read a word.

Green words;

Green words are words that are decodable, made up of sounds that your child recognises. Each sound has a button underneath called a ‘sound button’. The children must press each button and say the sound. They must then blend the sounds together to make the word. As your child progresses with their reading they will begin to read words by sight.

Red words-

Red words are used to help the children recognise words that are tricky. Red words are not decodable and you cannot sound them out. Red words are words that your child needs to learn and remember by sight.

How can you help at home?

• Practise reading the sounds
• Practise writing the sounds using the rhymes
• Have a go at reading the green words using ‘Fred Talk’
• Recognise red words together- remember you can’t Fred a red!”
• Have fun with Phonics!
