Assessment

Assessment

Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside. Assessment plays an important part in helping parents, carers and practitioners to recognise children’s progress, understand their needs, and to plan activities and support.

Ongoing Assessment

Children work and play independently with daily opportunities to engaged in child-initiated learning alongside their peers. We believe effective learning in the Early Years is the result of a balance between:

  • Adult-led learning- this is led and managed by an adult and is planned to meet specific learning needs.
  • Adult-guided learning- this is where adults scaffold children’s learning to offer support and guidance through questioning or prompting, in order for children to meet their desired outcome.
  • Child initiated learning- this is when the child chooses where to explore in the learning environment.

Observations

Daily observations take place across Nursery and Reception. Observation is the practice of looking and listening to children to observe their play and learning interactions to see what and how they are learning.

Each child has a unique set of abilities and talents which can be captured first-hand during observations. Observing what children choose to do, what their interests are and who and what resources they enjoy playing with, provides adults with reliable information about children as individuals.

Observations are used to create a child’s Learning Journey, to document their learning and progress throughout their time in the Early Years Foundation Stage. At Barwick-in-Elmet Church of England Primary School, we use Tapestry to document children's learning.

Please see the Tapestry tab on the previous page for more information.

Assessment at the end of Reception

At the end of the Reception Year, each child’s level of development is assessed against the early learning goals. The Reception Class Teacher will indicate whether children are meeting expected levels of development:

  • Emerging- beginning or not yet reaching expected levels of development for age
  • Expected
  • Exceeding- beyond expected levels of development for age
