PSHE

What does PSHE look like at Barwick-in-Elmet Church of England Primary School and Nursery?

PSHE Vision statement

Our PSHE Curriculum at Barwick in Elmet Primary School and Nursery is central to helping all pupils flourish and achieve their potential. We want our teaching to promote the vision and values of love, peace and respect so all members of the school and wider community can feel loved and understand as a Church of England school, He loved us first. We want all our pupils to feel they can develop their skills in communication, mutual respect, collaboration and resilience to help them navigate what they may come across in the wider world.

We are determined to equip all pupils with the important knowledge of PSHE so they can understand and celebrate their diversity, uniqueness and well being. We want them to feel emotionally happy and confident in a safe environment. Within our school, we follow Jigsaw which enables pupils to understand topics such as how to stay safe online, build and maintain successful relationships, how to keep our minds and bodies healthy and how to be responsible for our environment and world. We adapt our PSHE curriculum so that it meets the needs of the individual child. In addition, we have regular check-ins with our pupils and follow the zones of regulation to help them understand about their emotions and feelings. This enables them to understand how to ask for help and develop their confidence to do so with a trusted adult.

The themes taught within our PSHE Curriculum support social, moral, spiritual and cultural development and provide opportunities for pupils to become responsible members of society.

Our Intent (What we do)

Our intention for our PSHE Curriculum at Barwick in Elmet Primary School and Nursery is central to helping all pupils flourish and achieve their potential. We want our teaching to promote the vision and values of love, peace and respect so all members of the school and wider community can feel loved

and understand as a Church of England school, He loved us first. We want all our pupils to

feel they can develop their skills in communication, mutual respect, collaboration and

resilience to help them navigate what they may come across in the wider world.

We are determined to equip all pupils with the important knowledge and skills of PSHE so

they can understand and celebrate their diversity, uniqueness and well being. We want them

to feel emotionally happy, think critically, act with integrity and be confident in a safe

environment. Within our school, we follow Jigsaw which enables pupils to understand topics

such as how to stay safe online, build and maintain successful relationships, how to keep

our minds and bodies healthy and how to be responsible for our environment and world. We

adapt our PSHE curriculum so that it meets the needs of the individual child.

The themes taught within our PSHE Curriculum support social, moral, spiritual and cultural

development and provide opportunities for pupils to become responsible members of

society. Our Relationships and Sex Education allows children to build and maintain healthy

relationships, ensure they feel safe, build their mental well being and give them the

knowledge and skills to prepare them for future life.

Our Implementation (How we do what we do)

The Jigsaw scheme of work aims to develop the “whole child” through a spiral

curriculum. Weekly hour lessons are taught across the school. Half-termly units develop

knowledge, skills and understanding in the areas of:

● Autumn 1: Being Me in My World Includes understanding my own identity and how I

fit well in the class, school and global community. Jigsaw Charter established.

● Autumn 2: Celebrating Difference Includes anti-bullying and understanding

● Spring 1: Dreams and Goals Includes goal-setting, aspirations, who do I want to

become and what would I like to do for work and to contribute to society

● Spring 2: Healthy Me Includes drugs and alcohol education, self-esteem and

confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices, sleep, nutrition, rest and exercise

● Summer 1: Relationships Includes understanding friendship, family and other

relationships, conflict resolution and communication skills, bereavement and loss

● Summer 2: Changing Me Includes Relationships and Sex Education in the context of

coping positively with change.

In EYFS:

The provision is planned to ensure development in Physical, Social and Emotional

Development (PSED), which occurs daily. In provision, children will explore the ideas of

relationships, feelings and appropriate behaviours (sharing and turn taking), and rules and

routines.

In EYFS, KS1 and KS2:

We follow the Jigsaw Approach for our curriculum planning. The topics covered throughout

the year are outlined above. The Jigsaw curriculum consists of six puzzles, each designed to

be completed in order from September to July. Each puzzle contains six pieces (lessons),

and each piece has two key learning objectives: one focuses on specific PSHE learning,

covering the non-statutory national framework for PSHE Education, and the other focuses on

emotional literacy and social skills development to support children’s emotional and mental

well-being.

Our Impact (The result of what we do)

A meaningful PSHE curriculum will ensure that by the time children leave us, they:

  • Become happier, more positive learners who feel connected to school life and understand the importance of rules, responsibilities, and respectful behaviour.

  • Are equipped to handle setbacks, disagreements and challenges with resilience, confidence and emotional intelligence.

  • Engage in thoughtful discussion within a safe and supportive environment where they can express their feelings, opinions and ideas openly.

  • Understand, express and manage their emotions with maturity and empathy.

  • Prioritise their mental health and emotional well-being, using practical strategies to look after themselves and others.

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of the school values and the fundamental British Values, applying them with integrity in everyday life.

  • Show positive behaviour and a healthy attitude towards school, recognising their responsibility for their actions and the impact they have on others.

  • Take pride in their learning, with teachers capturing their progress and key moments including circle times, discussions, focus questions and independent tasks.

  • Benefit from a consistent approach across classrooms, enabling all children to build and deepen their PSHE knowledge, skills and attitudes over time.

  • Leave fully prepared to participate confidently in a diverse and modern society, equipped with the emotional resilience, social awareness and personal responsibility needed to thrive.

  • Build and sustain positive, healthy relationships with their peers, both now and in the years ahead.

  • Understand age-appropriate aspects of RSE with confidence and clarity.

  • Show respect for themselves and those around them.
