Our Intent (What we do)

At Barwick in Elmet Primary School and Nursery, our P.E. curriculum is designed to inspire all pupils to develop a lifelong love of physical activity, sport, and healthy living. We aim to foster a culture of enjoyment, resilience, and teamwork through a diverse range of sporting experiences that promote both physical competence and emotional well-being.

‘A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities.’ (National Curriculum in England, 2015)

We strive to ensure that every child, regardless of ability or background, feels confident and motivated to participate and achieve their personal best. Through our P.E. curriculum, we encourage pupils to understand the importance of both physical health and well-being and to make informed choices that support a healthy, active lifestyle.

Our curriculum not only develops physical literacy but also reinforces our school values. Allowing children to grow as individuals who show empathy, and a positive attitude both on and off the field.

Our Implementation (How we do what we do)

At Barwick in Elmet Primary School and Nursery, P.E. is delivered through a carefully structured and progressive curriculum that ensures all pupils experience breadth and depth in their learning. We follow the Twinkl Move programme, which is designed to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum while supporting the holistic development of each child.

P.E. is taught twice weekly across Key Stages 1 and 2, ensuring that all pupils engage in regular, high-quality physical activity. As well as P.E , in EYFS, physical development is also embedded through continuous provision and structured opportunities to build coordination, balance, and control.

Each unit of work builds progressively on previous skills and knowledge, enabling pupils to develop confidence and competence across a range of disciplines. Lessons are inclusive, with adaptations and scaffolding that allow all pupils to participate and achieve success.

Swimming and Water Safety form a statutory part of the National Curriculum for Physical Education. At Barwick in Elmet Primary School, pupils are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres. They learn to use a range of strokes effectively—such as front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke—and to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations. Swimming lessons are delivered by qualified instructors during Year 4, ensuring that all pupils have the opportunity to meet these national expectations and develop essential life-saving skills.

Through enrichment opportunities such as competitions and after-school clubs we provide pupils with opportunities to apply their skills in a wider context. We also promote leadership and teamwork through roles such as Sports Leaders and P.E Leaders who encourage and support individuals whilst learning to grow into roles of responsibility.

Our Impact (The result of what we do)

At Barwick in Elmet Primary School and Nursery, pupils leave with the knowledge, skills and motivation to lead healthy, active lifestyles and to enjoy participation in physical activity long beyond their primary years. They develop the physical competence, confidence, and character to take on new challenges with enthusiasm and resilience.

Our pupils demonstrate positive attitudes towards sport and exercise, showing respect for rules, fairness and teamwork. Through regular assessment and pupil voice, we monitor progress and enjoyment, ensuring that every child’s experience of P.E. is engaging, inclusive and empowering.

By the end of their time with us, pupils are well-prepared for the next stage of their education, equipped with the confidence to take part in a wide range of physical pursuits and an appreciation of the value of leading an active and healthy life.
