Talk For Writing

Writing ‘floats on a sea of talk’ James Britton

The Talk for Writing approach enables children to read and write independently for a variety of audiences and purposes within different subjects. A key feature is that children internalise the language structures needed to write through ‘talking the text’, as well as close reading. The approach moves from dependence towards independence, with the teacher using shared and guided teaching to develop the ability in children to write creatively and powerfully.

At Barwick we underpin our English work by establishing a core reading spine of quality fiction, poetry and non-fiction that all children experience and draw upon. Our Class Novels are selected carefully so that they link to the unit of writing we are covering.

Spelling

Spelling at Barwick in Elmet Primary School and Nursery

sessions include:

  • short, snappy 15 minute sessions

  • an exciting online spelling planet with three friendly aliens - Gamma, Zeta and Mu

  • level appropriate Log Books and Practice Books to support and record progress

  • practice tests to build confidence prior to Year 2 and 6 SATS

To promote independence within learning we always encourage children to correct their spelling independently using  their pupil spelling log books throughout each session.

Watch out for updated videos to learn more about our teaching and learning of spelling at Barwick.
