It is advised that you log into all relevant platforms in advance of clicking the links, for example Microsoft Teams and CS Kids.

Friday 5th March 2021

What is my Remote Learning task?

How long should it take me?

How will my teacher know what I have done?

Maths

Time to show what you have learned!

Since January, we have worked on decimals, percentages, algebra, converting units, measurements and ratios.

Record your answers to these maths questions. You do not need to print off the questions – simply record your answers in your Remote Learning book for each of the three sections: Decimals, volume and algebra.

45 mins - 1 hour

We will mark the answers when you come in to school on Monday, so make sure you bring your work in.

Final Write up

Today, you are going to use your work on your first draft of your  story along with the extract you wrote yesterday using the Toolkit to help add the finishing touches to your story. Watch this tutorial to explain your task.

Look through your writing for each section of the story, along with your boxing up and the ‘variety of toolkits’ before you start writing.

Write your final story in one sitting, focusing on all of the elements of the story.

45 mins – 1 hour

Bring your writing in on Monday and we will look at it in class.

Spelling

Spelling

Work through this tutorial on words which end with the ‘shul’ sound after a consonant letter.

Use this to help you practise the spellings.

Reading

Take a look at the reading comprehension in the resource folder. There are two texts (The Park and Bumble bees) and two sets of questions. You do not have to print out the texts or the questions – record your answers in your Remote Learning book.

30 mins – 1 hour

Bring your answers in on Monday and we will look at them in class.

Class Novel

Listen to Chapter 37 and 38 of Holes.
Collect any interesting words or phrases in your reading diary.

Calculating Scale Factors

We are continuing our work on ratio, fractions and proportions. Today we will look at calculating scale factors.

Watch the tutorial on CS Kids then do the

VF (varied fluency) tasks at the level you are comfortable with, then do the RPS (reasoning and problem solving) questions which challenge you.

There is an optional bonus challenge should you wish to complete it.

45 mins - 1 hour

The solutions can be found on the final page within

each document. You can

self-assess today once you have finished your

independent work, or send it to me on Teams for feedback.

English – Kidnapped

Before starting today’s English work, please ensure you have completed all shared write

sections 1 through to 5. There is a video tutorial for each individual section to help guide you through.

Editing and redrafting parts using the toolkits

Our flashback tale draws upon two main toolkits:

  1. Suspense writing
  2. Setting description

Using the Variety of Toolkitsdocument, which combines ideas from both toolkits, go through each aspect and see which bits are missing from your practice paragraphs. It should be clear to you at this stage which parts of your story are suitable for suspense writing, and which parts are suitable for setting description. Some paragraphs will contain both types of writing!

You don’t need to rewrite whole sections for this bit, just rewrite sentences on a new page and make it clear where abouts it will fit in. You might want to use a coloured pencil or pen and number each new sentence you add, then place that number in your practice paragraph to show where you want it to go.

Writing the first draft

45 mins – 1 hour

Send a photo of your work on Teams or email; I will give you feedback.

If you wish, you can write up your whole first draft, combining all sections into one complete story. Tomorrow will be your hot write, so you may wish to have a practice at blending your sections together first.

Good luck!

Report Writing – the final write up

Congratulations! You have made it to the final English lesson of this unit, and indeed of the half term! Before you begin today’s lesson, please make sure you have caught up with all of the other lessons. In particular, ensure that you have written your introduction, information paragraphs and conclusion.

Today’s lesson is in three stages:

Stage 1: Edit and redraft using the toolkit

  • Use the toolkit provided to edit and redraft parts of your work from the previous lessons, aiming to build in most, if not all, aspects of the toolkit. You could use a different coloured pen or pencil and use an asterisk (*) to mark where in your report you want to build in your redrafted sentences.

Stage 2: Final write up

  • Write your report out in full from start to finish, in a layout of your choice. Consider making final tweaks and changes such as adding labelled drawings and photographs, improving your vocabulary by researching better words and phrases, changing sentence openers etc.

Stage 3: Feedback

  • Send your report to us on Teams for detailed feedback, just like we did for your warning tale.

Make sure you are proud of your final piece before sending it in….good luck!

Today is the day of our geography virtual field trip! We had to postpone this last time due to the weather.

This will be taking place on Teams during your usual afternoon slot. We will be using Google Earth to take part in a guided tour of the Amazon, as part of our geography topic studying North and South America.

For your geography lesson today, you will choose one other area of study from our work on South America and explore some of the landmarks and useful information about the area. Your task is to take part in the online guided tour and then complete a ‘visitor’s guide’ or ‘brochure’ to encourage people to visit. Think about the kind of information and language you will use to make it persuasive!

I will show you how to launch the guided tours in this afternoon’s virtual session. There is also a step by step guide below.

Visit: https://earth.google.com/web/

Click the magnifying glass to search for a location. Enter your location, for example Rio de Janeiro.

Select Explore from the Guided Tours section:

From there, you are free to explore!

Here are some ideas for places you could study:

  • Peru
  • Macchu Pichu
  • Rio de Janeiro

Remember, we are doing the Amazon (Brazil) as part of today’s afternoon session.

Number Day!

Number Day!

Today we are doing

something a bit different.

Firstly, look at the children’s book ‘Five Clever Mice’ in Teams. Today’s challenge is to write your own children’s book using numbers in a similar way.

If you look closely there are lots of grammatical features in it.

- Subordinating clauses

- Fronted adverbials

- Parenthesis

- Direct speech

- Reporting clauses

- Conjunctions

And best of all…. Numbers. Make sure you fit all the above in!

There is a comic book strip template for you to use to create the different pages of your book.

Make it funny, engaging and use numbers in a really clever way!

It is National Story Telling Week so please record yourself reading your story and send it in via Teams – we’ll be judging the best!

Write up

Today, we are going to use the Warning Tale Toolkit to help add the finishing touches to our stories.

You don’t need to rewrite whole sections, just think about where various parts of the toolkit might fit nicely into your story. One way of doing this for each part of the toolkit could be to:

  • Write out the part of the toolkit in your book
  • Think about where in your story that part of the toolkit might fit (this could be several different times, and across more than one paragraph)
  • Underneath each part of the toolkit, write the extract that you want to build into your final story
  • Make it really clear where abouts in your story it will go

I recommend that you number each thing you add, and place the same number in your original draft using a coloured pencil, so that you remember to add the extra parts when you do your final write up!

45 mins – 1 hour

You can email me your work or send it to me on Teams for feedback.

Winnie the Pooh quotes

Winnie the Pooh stories are reknowned for their heartwarming quotes.

  2. What do you think it means, in your own words?
  3. Are there any important messages that this quote portrays?
  4. Can you relate this quote to anything in your own life, for example personal memories?

Bonus Challenge:

Winnie the Pooh quotes often involve conversations between Pooh and other characters, e.g. Piglet. Although the conversation may seem basic, the hidden meaning that can be drawn from them is much deeper.

  3. On Microsoft Teams, I have made a space that we can all write on. It’s called a Collaboration Space. I want us to try and use it today to share different ways we could innovate the story. On the Year 6 group on Teams, visit ‘Class Notebook’ at the top, beside ‘Files’. Click the little arrow on the top left, beside the welcome message. You will find a table under ‘Collaboration Space’. 1. Retell ‘Adventure at Sandy Cove’. Pick up where you left off yesterday with your story map. Continue to map out the story, up to the point where you can retell it all accurately. Your aim is to be able to retell the whole story (short version) by Thursday. If you have completed the story map, just practise retelling it off by heart.

  1. Our toolkit for this text will involve creating SUSPENSE. Some of the toolkit items from ‘Alien Landing’ will definitely belong in this toolkit! Begin to examine the model text (long version) to see if you can come up with ideas for the toolkit. If possible, print the text and use coloured pens on parts you think are relevant for our toolkit. If you cannot print, make notes on the Word document in a different colour.

  1. Do some research online to see what helps to create suspense in writing. Remember: try to avoid terms like ‘use rhetorical questions…talk about what is REALLY happening, for example: ‘ask questions to make the reader think, e.g. What was that sound?

Begin to draft your ideas in a rough toolkit, and share your final products with me on Teams! Use a different colour for the examples, like I have done above. All toolkits should start with the sentence:

What is my Remote Learning task?

How long should it take me?

How will my teacher know what I have done?

Maths

Explore the maths worksheets on simplifying fractions.

Choose the level of difficulty that is right for you, then do the same for the reasoning and problem solving questions.

45 mins

You can reply to the email I sent you this morning with pictures of your work, or to ask any questions!

The solutions can be found on the final page within each document. You can self-assess today once you have finished your independent work, or send it to me for feedback.

English

Take a look at the ‘Don’t Go Out After Dark’ text as part of our new non-fiction unit.

Can you retell the text with actions?

Generate a story map for the first section, just like we did for ‘Alien Landing’.

In class, we will be working in groups to map the whole text- if you have time, you can do the same.

30 mins

You can email me your story map, or evidence of you retelling with actions!

Reading

Take a look at the reading comprehension in the resource folder – The Raven.

Can you answer the VIPERS questions?

30 mins

If you send me a photo of your answers on Teams or email, I will give you feedback.

Topic

History- Agricultural Revolution.

The fourth lesson in our unit looks into child labour in factories. Explore the powerpoint, taking a look at the primary and secondary accounts to get an ideas of people’s experiences in the factories. Use what you find to answer the question:

“What was life in factories like for children at the time?”

If you wish, you can complete the diary entry task as an additional challenge.

45 mins

If you send me an extract of your work on Teams, I will give you feedback.
