You might have noticed that the model text does not have sub-headings.

Instead, in Year 6, we can use TOPIC SENTENCES. These are like little introductions to the paragraph allowing you to add more detail than you would in a simple heading.

Take a look at the examples in the worksheet for today, then complete the task on the second page. You should generate 9 sentences in total- three for each type of text.

Challenge- can you come up with a report theme of your own, and generate topic sentences for the different sections that it might include?

Formal Language

Today, we are going to practise the skill of SOUNDING LIKE AN EXPERT. This is called using formal language.

Imagine you are David Attenborough narrating a TV show or your writing will feature in a non-fiction book from the library. We don’t need to make our reader laugh, persuade them or in fact give any opinion at all. Our main job is to give information as precisely as possible.

  1. Warm up- read the two texts on the English worksheet. Spot which is formal and which is informal. Discuss what makes each type of writing unique.
  2. Complete the formal/ informal quiz, selecting whether sentences use formal or informal language.
  3. Rewrite each sentence the other way around, showing that you can change informal language to formal language (and vice versa).
  4. Analyse the emails and decide whether each one is formal or informal. Highlight/ annotate the emails to list the specific features that make each one formal or informal.

Generating a Toolkit

Today, I want you to begin to think about ideas for a report writing toolkit. What sort of features/ ingredients make up a well-structured report?

Share your ideas on Padlet in the same way as we have done before, putting your name at the top, just like my example:

https://padlet.com/darrylroycroft/rbobw42e9nlb239c

Just click outside the box to post your comment once you’ve written it!

You can come up with ideas in your head, or you can supplement it with research online. I expect at least 3 ideas from each person, along with examples, just like I have demonstrated.

You can add comments to each other’s ideas, but remember to keep them clean and friendly! You can also like other people’s posts to show them you agree with their idea.

Innovation - Boxing up

Usually, at this stage, we would complete our innovation in the third column of the boxing up grid. I have removed this column for now and instead want you to fill in the middle column, which we usually do as a class.

Read over the model text and write up the parts that belong in each section. You can just write this in note form, summarising the main info from the model text in its correct place on the boxing up grid.

This will really help you to secure your understanding of the structure of a report, before we innovate our own. You can either type your notes into the word document in Files, or you can recreate the table on paper.

Bonus challenge:

Can you research mythical creatures that you might be inspired to write about for your own report? Which one inspires you the most? Could you combine multiple creatures to create a new one?

Geography

In this unit, we will be brushing up on our mapping skills. In class, we would have used atlases- feel free to use one if you happen to have one at home! If not, follow the link below to access an online atlas:

https://kids.britannica.com/kids/browse/atlas

Use the drop-down search bar to research five European countries of your choice. Here are some ideas: France, Germany, Italy, UK, Switzerland

For each country, use the ‘profile’ section to gather the following data for each country:

  • Head of State
  • Head of Government
  • Capital
  • Official Language(s)
  • Monetary unit (currency)
  • Population
  • Population rank
  • Life expectancy

Calculating Scale Factors

We are continuing our work on ratio, fractions and proportions. Today we will look at calculating scale factors.

Watch the tutorial on CS Kids then do the

VF (varied fluency) tasks at the level you are comfortable with, then do the RPS (reasoning and problem solving) questions which challenge you.

There is an optional bonus challenge should you wish to complete it.

The solutions can be found on the final page within

each document. You can

self-assess today once you have finished your

independent work, or send it to me on Teams for feedback.

English – Kidnapped

Before starting today’s English work, please ensure you have completed all shared write

sections 1 through to 5. There is a video tutorial for each individual section to help guide you through.

Editing and redrafting parts using the toolkits

Our flashback tale draws upon two main toolkits:

  1. Suspense writing
  2. Setting description

Using the Variety of Toolkitsdocument, which combines ideas from both toolkits, go through each aspect and see which bits are missing from your practice paragraphs. It should be clear to you at this stage which parts of your story are suitable for suspense writing, and which parts are suitable for setting description. Some paragraphs will contain both types of writing!

You don’t need to rewrite whole sections for this bit, just rewrite sentences on a new page and make it clear where abouts it will fit in. You might want to use a coloured pencil or pen and number each new sentence you add, then place that number in your practice paragraph to show where you want it to go.

Writing the first draft

45 mins – 1 hour

Send a photo of your work on Teams or email; I will give you feedback.

If you wish, you can write up your whole first draft, combining all sections into one complete story. Tomorrow will be your hot write, so you may wish to have a practice at blending your sections together first.

Good luck!

Report Writing – the final write up

Congratulations! You have made it to the final English lesson of this unit, and indeed of the half term! Before you begin today’s lesson, please make sure you have caught up with all of the other lessons. In particular, ensure that you have written your introduction, information paragraphs and conclusion.

Today’s lesson is in three stages:

Stage 1: Edit and redraft using the toolkit

  • Use the toolkit provided to edit and redraft parts of your work from the previous lessons, aiming to build in most, if not all, aspects of the toolkit. You could use a different coloured pen or pencil and use an asterisk (*) to mark where in your report you want to build in your redrafted sentences.

Stage 2: Final write up

  • Write your report out in full from start to finish, in a layout of your choice. Consider making final tweaks and changes such as adding labelled drawings and photographs, improving your vocabulary by researching better words and phrases, changing sentence openers etc.

Stage 3: Feedback

  • Send your report to us on Teams for detailed feedback, just like we did for your warning tale.

Make sure you are proud of your final piece before sending it in….good luck!

Today is the day of our geography virtual field trip! We had to postpone this last time due to the weather.

This will be taking place on Teams during your usual afternoon slot. We will be using Google Earth to take part in a guided tour of the Amazon, as part of our geography topic studying North and South America.

For your geography lesson today, you will choose one other area of study from our work on South America and explore some of the landmarks and useful information about the area. Your task is to take part in the online guided tour and then complete a ‘visitor’s guide’ or ‘brochure’ to encourage people to visit. Think about the kind of information and language you will use to make it persuasive!

I will show you how to launch the guided tours in this afternoon’s virtual session. There is also a step by step guide below.

Visit: https://earth.google.com/web/

Click the magnifying glass to search for a location. Enter your location, for example Rio de Janeiro.

Select Explore from the Guided Tours section:

From there, you are free to explore!

Here are some ideas for places you could study:

  • Peru
  • Macchu Pichu
  • Rio de Janeiro

Remember, we are doing the Amazon (Brazil) as part of today’s afternoon session.

Number Day!

Number Day!

Today we are doing

something a bit different.

Firstly, look at the children’s book ‘Five Clever Mice’ in Teams. Today’s challenge is to write your own children’s book using numbers in a similar way.

If you look closely there are lots of grammatical features in it.

- Subordinating clauses

- Fronted adverbials

- Parenthesis

- Direct speech

- Reporting clauses

- Conjunctions

And best of all…. Numbers. Make sure you fit all the above in!

There is a comic book strip template for you to use to create the different pages of your book.

Make it funny, engaging and use numbers in a really clever way!

It is National Story Telling Week so please record yourself reading your story and send it in via Teams – we’ll be judging the best!

Write up

Today, we are going to use the Warning Tale Toolkit to help add the finishing touches to our stories.

You don’t need to rewrite whole sections, just think about where various parts of the toolkit might fit nicely into your story. One way of doing this for each part of the toolkit could be to:

  • Write out the part of the toolkit in your book
  • Think about where in your story that part of the toolkit might fit (this could be several different times, and across more than one paragraph)

  2. What do you think it means, in your own words?
  3. Are there any important messages that this quote portrays?
  4. Can you relate this quote to anything in your own life, for example personal memories?

Can you rewrite some of the phrases in your own words?

For example, if the text says “The trees were like crazed zombies thrashing wildly”, this is basically telling us that the trees blew around in the wind. You could rewrite this as follows:
