Kassim and The Greedy Dragon Innovation (part 3)

Today it’s time to write the short paragraph where your ‘monster’ is described.

Use the Monster Writing Frame sheet. Firstly, draw a quick sketch of your monster to help you to generate some ideas.

On the left hand side of the table, write three body parts of your creature, and try to write a simile about them, for example:

Teeth like boulders.

Tail like a snake

Claws like daggers.

On the right hand side, write three verbs to describe how your monster moves, or makes noise.

Using what you write in the table, complete the text map for today, and have a go at writing the descriptive sentences.

The original text will help you to clearly see the structure.

On Friday, we worked as a class with Mr Walker to generate some ideas to describe a dragon.

Today, use the planning sheet to independently have a go yourself.

On the left hand side of each part of the dragon, try to generate some interesting adjectives to describe that part of the dragon. On the right hand side, you can either write verbs, or similes.

For example:

spiked, jagged horns as sharp as daggers

oval eyes glaring

In PSHE today, the class is exploring how medicines work, and how important it is to use them safely.

Watch this clip to introduce the idea of medicines. Then, discuss medicines with your grown-up at home. Consider these questions:

What medicines do you have at home?

Who is allowed to handle medicines?

What might happen if you took the wrong medicine?

How are medicines kept safe in your home?

Use what you find out to make a poster showing how children can stay safe with medicines at home.

Can I plan an explanation text?

This week you are going to build towards writing your own explanation text.

Firstly, write the word ‘nuisance’ in the middle of a piece of paper, and write anything that comes to your head that you find irritating. Try not to think too much as you do it, there’s no wrong answer.

Then it’s time to pick one of those nuisances to focus upon. A good one will be one where you can think of several different reasons why you find it to be a nuisance.

Use the rest of your time to plan your own explanation text, using the text map. Fill in the blanks, following the same structure as the original text. The first paragraph is about what the nuisance looks like/ it’s main characteristics.

In each of the other paragraphs, focus on one particular reason it is a nuisance.

Fluency Friday

This week, we are going to tackle some division questions. As with the other operations, we will use a strategy where we draw images. If you are able to do these mentally, because you can link them to multiplication mentally, that’s fantastic! For example, if you saw 8÷2, you know you could count in 2s, and see that 4 groups of 2 make 8, so 8÷2 = 4.

However, please using images for any you are not sure of.

Method

Relate the ÷ sign to ‘sharing’. So, in the example below, 12÷3= can be read as ’12 shared between 3’.

First, you would first draw 3 groups to share the 12 into.

Then, you would share them 1 at a time into each group.

Finally, check each group has an equal amount.

12 divided by 3 equals 4 each.

Try to complete as many of these question as you can:

6 ÷ 2 =

10 ÷ 5 =

8 ÷ 2 =

40 ÷ 10 =

20 ÷ 5 =

14 ÷ 2 =

16 ÷ 4 =

15 ÷ 3 =

12 ÷ 6 =

10 ÷ __ = 5

__ ÷ 10 = 6

35 ÷ __ = 7

__ ÷ 2 = 12

Why Rain is a Nuisance

Today, use your time to finish writing ‘Why Rain is a Nuisance’. Use the text map, and make sure you rehearse each sentence out loud before you write it.

After you have finished, it’s time to proofread. Again, reading out loud is the key to checking if it makes sense! Use a different coloured pen or pencil crayon to make any changes, and give yourself a silent cheer if you spot any. As always, pay special attention to remembering capital letters, and ensuring they are ‘tall’.

I look forward to reading your work.

Can I Interpret Pictograms?

Main

Watch the video tutorial with Katie today. Pay close attention to how the value of each piece of information on a pictogram may not always be 1. This can really catch us out if we’re not looking for it!

After this, complete the interactive activity, to show how accurately you can interpret the data shown in a pictogram. The biggest stumbling block can be the language used: discuss with a grown-up any terms you are not sure of, which might include: most popular, least popular altogether, how many more, or twice.

Bonus Challenge

If you feel confident, try the ice cream themed challenge. Be careful, in one pictogram, each ice cream represents 2 ice creams!

Why Rain is a Nuisance

First, rehearse out loud the first half of your innovated ‘Why Rain is a Nuisance’. As you do so, are there any parts where you could make the text more interesting? Could you add an expanded noun phrase or use any of the magpie words we found on Monday? Yesterday we came up with some great ideas in class about floods, terrifying storms and being waterlogged!

After this, use your text map to write the first half of the explanation text. Please keep a big focus on using capital letters to start your sentences!

Innovating the text

In class today we are looking at different ways to innovate our text. Instead of writing about seagulls, we are writing: ‘Why Rain is a Nuisance.’

Can you make a list of different ways rain can be a nuisance?

In class we might think of these reasons. Can you add any more to the list?

  • Can’t play with friends.
  • Can’t go outside for break time.
  • Makes your hair and clothes wet.
  • It makes your shoes muddy.
  • It’s cold and freezing.
  • It makes the playground slippy.

This text map is the same as the one we used to learn ‘Why Seagulls are a Nuisance’, but blank spaces have been added to ‘innovate’ the text.

In the first paragraph, add your own images to describe the appearance of rain. In each of the following four paragraphs, add images to give one reason why rain can be a nuisance. On the text map, I’ve written a simple example that might help you if you get stuck to come up with ideas.

When you have completed the text map, spend time practising saying the text out loud. Over Thursday and Friday, you will be writing the innovated version of ‘Why Rain is a Nuisance’.

Science: Can I compare microhabitats?

Read through the PowerPoint for today’s lesson. The class is going to compare two microhabitats in around the school. Instead, could you find and compare two microhabitats in your garden? Remember last  we found that looking under things (whilst supervised by a grown-up) can lead to some amazing discoveries! Use the tally chart, and record your findings on a block diagram (page 2).

What is my Remote Learning task?

(Please note, this week is Assessment Week is class. Therefore, on some days I will set ‘one off’ tasks/lessons for maths and/or English, instead of the assessments being completed in class. We will catch up on assessments when you return to class.)

How long should it take me?

How will my teacher know what I have done?

Maths

Can I divide by 5?

Main

Read through today’s slides on Classroom Secrets Kids, and answer the questions.  Remember, the speaker in the top right corner will explain each slide to you. The key is to recognise that dividing by 5 is the inverse of multiplying by 5.

After this, try today’s worksheet. As before, work through as much of the varied fluency questions as you can. If you can complete at least the ‘EX’ questions (blue star), then try the reasoning and problem solving questions.

How to write commands

It’s time to be bossy! Watch this video about how to write command sentences. Then play the game highlighting the imperative verbs.

Commands are very common in recipes. If you have a recipe book at home, find the instructions and see how many bossy verbs you can find.

Then, use command sentences to finish the workout plan written below. Underline the imperative verbs in your sentences. It’d be impressive if you included some adverbs as well.

You may even find a volunteer to perform it for you, so be nice!

Adverbs

Adverbs tell us more about a verb in a sentence, for instance by telling us how a verb happened. Lots of adverbs are formed by adding the suffix –ly to an adjective.

Watch the video on this link to remind you about adverbs.

Roleplay: Who Am I?

One way of showing you really understand a text, is to roleplay a character from it. Choose a book that is really popular in your house, with lots of characters you find really interesting. You may really like them, or think they are tremendously irritating, it doesn’t matter!

Spend some time considering what each character is like. Use the text to help you to think about how they talk, how they move, and what their personality is like. Then play a guess who game.

  1. Can another person guess which character you are if you silently pretend to be the?
  2. For an extra clue, you could tell them about yourself in character.

Take turns to play, it’s a lot of fun!

In class today, we are using a substitution grid to consider how to alter different elements of the Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch, to turn it into our own story.

Mind-map some ideas that you might use, based on the following categories:

  • Main Character (MC).
  • Food (What the MC likes to eat)
Monster (What problem do they cause? This should fit with the character/ food chosen)
  • A plan that does not work
  • A plan that does work

Come up with at least five ideas for each category. Try to follow themes within your ideas, for instance a mouse might desire cheese.

After this, use a different colour, and write as many exciting adjectives to describe your ideas for main character, food and monster as you can.

Fluency Friday

This Friday, we are continuing our fluency practice.  This time, we are looking at subtraction, up to 2-digit – 2-digit.

Please see below the approach shared in previous home learning:

1) Draw the number you will subtract from, in tens and ones.

2) DO NOT draw the second number! Instead, subtract it from the first number by ‘crossing out’. Subtract the ones, then subtract the tens.

3) Count the tens and ones remaining to see how many are left.

Use this approach to answer these questions:

English: Innovating The Model Text

This week we began to innovate our model text: Should Cat, Bramble and Heron Hire a Monster to Guard the Gold?

We have changed the question to ‘Should Children run the School?’

Imagine if that happened! Using the box-it up sheet, role play all the reasons you can think of why this might be a great idea, as well as any reasons you can think of why it might not be such a good idea!

Then, use your ideas to make notes on the plan. Try to also include the key grammatical features needed for each paragraph.

Science/PE: The effects of exercise on our body.

Watch this BBC Bitesize video. Then read through this information sheet.

We have been exploring the effects of exercise on the human body, and how it affects our heart rate. Pick two of the following exercises, and predict whether doing them for 30 seconds would change your heart rate.

  • Touching your toes
  • Running on the spot
  • Tapping your nose
  • Star jumps
  • Hop on the spot
  • Sit down and stand up
  • Wiggling your fingers
  • Balancing on one leg.

Then, complete your chosen exercises to see if you were right. Think about how your heart rate changed. Is one of the exercises more beneficial for your body than the other?

Half-Term Holidays: asking, telling and yelling!

Last year we learned that we use different punctuation depending on whether we are asking (?), telling (.) or yelling(!). After half term we will be different exploring sentence types in more detail.

Research things you plan to do in the half-term holidays. Then, get a blank sheet of paper, and fold it into quarters, or split a page in a book into quarters.

In each quarter, please draw one activity you are going to do. It could be anything from having a day trip out, eating a yummy meal, or even just enjoying watching some TV!

Under each drawing can you write a caption. Your challenge is to write two sentences ending in a full stop, one using an exclamation mark, and one question with a question mark.

Good luck!

As Christians, we use Harvest as a time to think about all the good things in our lives and what we are thankful for. What are you thankful for?

Put “I am thankful for…” in the middle of your page and write as many things as possible around it that you are thankful for.

Consider also who you are thankful for.

Guy Fawkes

In class, we have recapped the story of the Gunpowder Plot, up until Guy Fawkes was in the cellar, ready to light the gunpowder and blow up the Houses of Parliament.

Use this PowerPoint to remind you of the story, but stop at slide 5.

Role play

Over slides 6 and 7, imagine you are Guy Fawkes. We did something similar in Year 1. Imagine it is very dark, and you are in a damp, scary place. What might you hear, see, and smell in such a place? Become Guy Fawkes, and role play creeping through the cellar, always worried you might be discovered!

Here are some sentences starters you might use to explain verbally what you might say if you were Guy Fawkes:

There are…..

My eyes can see…

Now I can hear…

I feel…..

I can see…

I  can hear…

I can smell...

Now you have revised how to use < and > to compare numbers, work through these lesson slides.

Finally, complete this task. You will need some scissors and either sellotape or glue.

Extra challenge: if you have time, have a look at this task. You can cut out the ‘cards’ if you wish and move them around to work out your numbers.

PE: Rounders

Today we will be playing rounders. It’s not easy to play rounders if you don’t have enough people to make a team. So you have three different tasks to complete:

  1. Practise throwing and catching a small ball (either with a partner or against a wall) – this will help with fielding when you are back at school
  2. Practise your running.
  3. Design a team strip for a Rowan Class rounders team. You can use this outline or draw your own.

Maths: subtraction game

For this game, you will need to choose some objects to represent tens (e.g. pencils) and some objects to represent ones (e.g. buttons). Cut out the questions on the sheet, or write them onto scraps of paper at home. Place your tens and ones objects somewhere you have to run to. (We are using the school field! If you can’t go outside, perhaps you can use a hallway at home.) The game starts when you look at your first question. You have to calculate the answer, then fetch tens and ones to represent the answer. You can only fetch one ten or one at a time! If you can persuade someone at home to play with you, you can make it into a competition. Every correct answer scores one point.

Today was another blazing, hot day in our village.

I got up early to begin working but it was too hot to milk the cow! So, I went inside to cool down.

Then my Grandfather told me a secret so that I could make it rain! I set off to find the highest mountain I could! As I walked and walked, I felt sizzled like a sausage! Finally, I stood before a magnificent mountain! I climbed higher and higher and eventually got to the top. Immediately, I told the sky the saddest things I knew to make it rain. Unfortunately, nothing happened so I started to cry. Then I felt a gentle raindrop on my foot and another and another. Soon, there was lots of rain!

Quickly, I ran home to find everyone singing and dancing! Now, everyone is happy because we have plenty of rain! Strangely, Cow looked surprisingly pleased with herself!

Retrieval – Money

Today, you will have a selection of money questions and challenges to have a go at. I really would like to see what you can remember from our work all about money.

Task 1 – Order the coins. In the ‘files’ tab, you will find a sheet which asks you to order the coins from the smallest to the largest and then label the coins. You might like to ask your parents if they have some real life coins that you could use to have a look at.

Task 2 – Classroom secrets questions. Also in the ‘files’ tab, you will find a selection of Classroom Secrets questions all linked to matching the same amount of coins to the amount. Just have a go, remember you don’t need to answer ALL of them!

Task 3 – What can you buy? You will find this task at the bottom of task 1. You will have different amounts of money to decide what things you would be able to buy with that amount. Bonus challenge: can you say what you could NOT buy with that amount?
