Weekly Class Updates

Friday 18th December 2020

Today marks the end of the first term!

I would like to thank the children for all their hard work and commitment since starting back at school in September. The children have adapted to our new environment and we have worked together to create a happy and creative place to learn. They really do deserve a rest over the Christmas Holidays!

I hope that everyone has a Happy Christmas and I look forward to welcome the children back in the New Year.

Best Wishes,

Mrs Fox

This week, we have been working on dividing numbers by 10 and 100 in Maths.

In English, we have completed our most recent unit in English. Everyone has written their own finding tale based around our model text Reilly.

On Monday, we had Alive and Kicking in school. They performed a socially distant panto for us.

Friday 27th November 2020

This week we have finished off our Maths unit on Perimeter. We have worked hard to find the perimeter of rectilinear shapes. We start our new unit all about multiplication and division this next week.

In English, we have finished planning our guided write and are ready to start writing!

In Science, we experimented with different materials to find out if they are conductors or insulators of electricity. We set up simple circuits to test the different materials.

Friday 20th November 2020

It has been another busy week in Year 4!

In Maths, we have been learning all about perimeter. We have started off by calculating the perimeter of rectilinear shapes that have been on a grid before we moved onto calculating the perimeter of rectangles.

In English, we have started a new unit of work. On Tuesday, we completed our Hook lesson which involved us all making our own magical wizard wand!

In Science this week, we have been testing circuits. The children have made circuits to find out which were complete circuits and which circuits were incomplete!

Friday 13th November 2020

It has been another busy week in Year 4!

In Maths, we have finished our unit on addition and subtraction with some estimating. We made sure that we could remember how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 before we estimated answers using these skills.

In English, we have been writing our independent writes. We have drafted and edited our independent writes before copying them up in best. Next week, we will start our new writing unit!

Friday 6th November 2020

Welcome back after half term!

This week in English we have been busy writing! Our focus at the moment is to explain how something works. We have been explaining how our spy gadgets work! As a class, we have been trying to complete as much of our guided write as we can! We still have one more paragraph left!

Within Maths, we have really challenged ourselves to answer more challenging subtraction questions. Next week, we move onto a new until of work which is all about length.

This week, we have started our new science topic and art work. In Art, we have looked at our BIG Picture which is “Street Light” by Giacomo Balla.

Friday 23rd October 2020

In Maths, we have been doing lots of work on addition. We have been working on our reasoning and problem solving skills and challenging our knowledge of column addition.

In English, we finished learning our model text ready for after half term when we start the innovation stage.

In RE this week with Mrs Nicholson, we created our own Gospel frieze panel in response to our unit question: What kind of world did Jesus want?

RE - Gospel Frieze Panel

Friday 16th October 2020

It has been another very busy week this week!

In English, we have started our new unit of writing. This unit is all about explanation texts. We have been learning our new model text over the last few days and so this week as part of our Home Learning I have asked the children to practise recalling the model text from memory using the actions we learnt and their text map.

In Maths, we have been working with Roman Numerals. We have worked really hard applying our knowledge of Roman Numerals to addition and subtraction questions! Everyone has done a brilliant job of converting Roman Numerals to numbers so they can complete calculations before they have converted their answer back to Roman Numerals!!

In Art, we have been working on mixing colours using Power Paint. All the children have developed their mixing skills and will be working on creating a portrait next week!

Friday 9th October 2020

It was lovely to talk to all the parents this week at our Virtual Parents Evening.

This week in Maths, we have been looking at rounding numbers. We have rounded to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. Over the week, the children have built up their confidence and have done really well at moving between rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000!

In English this week, been writing independent stories set in a rainforest. The children planned and wrote these stories on their own - There are some fabulous independent stories!

Friday 2nd October 2020

This week has been another very busy week! In Maths, we have been ordering 4-digit numbers, counting in 25’s and we have been working on our subtraction in our fluency lessons. We have been building our confidence when we have to exchange numbers.

In writing this week, we have planned and started to write our independent stories! We have been trying to apply everything we have learnt into our story to improve it.

In RE this week with Mrs Nicholson, we had a virtual visitor! We were very excited when we got the chance to have a virtual meeting!

Friday 25th September 2020

This week in English, we have been working on the Innovation Stage in Talk for Writing. We have been recapping grammar and punctuation objectives such as fronted adverbials and inverted commas to include in our writing. We have planned and written our innovated stories with support from the model text and the work in class. Next week, we move onto independent application which involves us writing our own stories with as little support as possible.

In Maths this week, we have been using the more than and less than symbols. We have become much more confident when using them to compare different 4-digit numbers.

Friday 18th September 2020

This week in Talk for Writing we have been working on the Imitation Stage. As a class, we have learnt the model text using actions and a text map. We also played games to check how well we knew it! Once we had learnt our model text off by heart, we wrote it out in words from memory, just using the text map to help us!!

Within Maths, we have been trying really hard to become more confident when plotting numbers and estimating numbers on a number line.

Friday 11th September

What a FANTASTIC first week back! I have really enjoyed getting to know the children in year 4! We have had a busy week full of exciting things!

As part of our Talk for Writing, we have practiced using a text map to learn the model text. We used actions to help us remember! The children then changed the story and created their own text maps.

Today, we have also had a secret mission as part of our launch to our new unit of writing!!

In Maths this week, we have done lots of work around place value. We have been working with 4-digit numbers – the children have looked at 1000 more and 1000 less than any number as well as looking at partitioning numbers. We have used a range of practical resources and representations to support us this week.

Another exciting thing we have got up to this week is Music! This half term, we are looking at music from Mamma Mia! We listened to the music first, found the pulse of the music and then we created our own rhythms.
